The Calabrian producers

The demand for bergamot on international markets has increased exponentially. The crops of “true” bergamot of Calabria make up no more than 10% of the global international demand. What safeguards the considerable demand is the cost of the product and the consortium of protection.
In Calabria, bergamot plantations have increased, but businesses are located throughout the region, also in Sicily and Puglia.

The area where bergamot is produced

Did you know that the most sought-after citrus fruit in the world for its countless beneficial properties is produced in a patch of land in the heart of Locride?

The fruit of extraordinary beneficial virtues, bergamot is the “green gold” of Calabria, famous and appreciated throughout the world. It is in a small piece of land in the heart of the Locride, stretching from Villa San Giovanni, on the Strait of Messina, to Siderno, that 90% of the global production of this precious citrus fruit is concentrated.

Approximately 1,500 hectares of citrus orchard produced 200 thousand kilos of bergamot per year which will then be processed and squeezed to obtain the essence of the highest antioxidant ability, many in demand also in the cosmetic field. The cultivation of this fruit on the coast of Calabria Regio goes back to the 18th century and here during the 19th century, the first extraction of bergamot essential oil was documented.

The additional bergamot region of Calabria does not have nutraceutical advantages, and even less healthy may have sufficient titration for essential oil. This information is helpful in selecting the Calabrian DOP product.
